Athens, Greece – In a country celebrated for ancient knowledge, Greece is giving a modern solution to the challenge of a stressful household: gives parents the ability to oversee their children’s online activities.
On Monday, the government launched a state-directed mobile application, identifying one of Europe’s one-of-one steps towards digital age verification.
IOS and Android are now available for children wallet parents to verify their kids on digital platforms and to equip their browsing activities, officials said.
Dimitris Papstarjio, Minister of Digital Administration, said, “This is an application that is Greece – and Europe – the age of the children must be ensured when they use social media.” “It will also serve as an identification tool for the upcoming initiative.”
In contrast to the strict approach adopted in some European countries, the use of Greece is volunteer, though officials argued that it provided more powerful control. This initiative has come together with a broad EU-altar attempt to administer age to the member states.
The app is integrated with Greece’s Government Service Platform, already to pay taxes, navigate the bureaucracy, and even buy saucer tickets and work with the existing digital ID system for adults.
Parents will log in using their online tax identification credentials.
Digital consent is set at 15 at 15, and officials invite large digital platforms to cooperate in the rollout.
“Dear platforms, we ask for your cooperation so that together we can protect the kids at a weak age,” said Pupartarjio.
Prime Minister Kiriakos Mitsotakis supported the initiative, expressed concern over the impact of technology in family life. “You see families in restaurants where parents and children are on their phone and when you think they actually talk to each other,” he said.
A 2024 survey of the Greek research firm KMP found that 9-12 years old 76..6% of children have internet access through private devices, 1..6% of social media every day, and 22.5% faced inappropriate material.
The introduction of the application is part of the broad government system to prevent youth violence and to integrate with the EU plan to strengthen online protection for minors.
