Tokyo – Japan’s top automaker Toyota on Wednesday announced the partnership with US autonomous driving technology company Weemo.
The move was somewhat expected, as the use of this national technology accelerated worldwide and the Toyota Motor Corporation was aggressive about the intention of being at the top of this national progress.
Toyota Executive Vice President Hiroki Nakazima said in a statement, “Toyota is committed to realizing a society with zero traffic accidents and become a mobility agency.
Beginning as a Google Self-Driving Car Project in the 21st, Wemo now provides full autonomous ride-helling services in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Austin and is turning it to other cities in the United States. It is also a partnership with the ride-helling leader Uber.
Toyota has created a city near Fuji Mount Fuji, known as Waven City to test the Toyota Robotics, artificial intelligence and autonomous zero transport. The creators of Camery Cedan and Lexus Luxury models are very careful about auto technology rolling to protect its reputation as a safe and environmentally conscious manufacturer.
Wemor co-chief executive officer Tekdra Mawakana said the partners are the key to winning the trust.
“This requires global partners like Toyota that shares our commitment to improve road protection and expand accessible transport,” said Mawakana.
The terms of the agreement were not detailed. Both sides have said that they are still exploring how their cooperation can develop into actual products.
Although there are various test versions of full autonomous vehicles in Japan, they are now limited to certain limited regions. Other companies and automackers are working on similar services, including mass transit.
