Local ‘Sistine Chapel’ in Maine has impressive interior not largely known to the public

A church in New England can look like a few dozen from the outside – but it is surprising after you set foot through the door.

According to the Associated Press (AP), locals are known as “Maine Sistine Chapel” in the South Solone Meeting House of Waterville in Maine.

Inside the building, the walls and ceilings are covered in 70 -year -old Fresco murals painted by artists in the 1950s.

The meeting house was built in 1842 and hosted the church services until the 1940s, as said AP.

In 1951, the empty building was discovered by former art student Margaret Day Blake.

Blake Skhegan reached the school of painting and sculpture students and called young artists to draw Fresco, AP said.

Bible scenes of artists were asked to re -create for the “rich and appropriate” image.

Maine’s Colbie College has dedicated a website to the Church by describing various scenes and 3 artists displayed in the building.

New York City’s non -Genorian Sigmund Abels and Newton’s Sydney Hurweets, Massachusetts were two artists who contributed.
