Ham cases continue in Texas as the first outbreak began in late January.
State Health Officer filed a 566 confirmed cases across 20 counties on Tuesday, and from April 1 to 25 increased by 20.
According to Reuters quoting the Texas State Health Services Department (DSHS), Gaines County cases of West Texas have jumped from 355 to 364. According to health officials, this county is now about 65% of the state’s total cases.
In response to this outbreak, the US government will send seven workers to the state to help fight the outbreak, the outlet said.

According to Reuters, Dr. David Sugarman of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about the American response to Ham outbreak on Tuesday. He said the CDC had already deployed 5 workers in Texas from March 7 to April 7, and the company planned to send a second team on Tuesday, the outlet said.
However, Sugarman said that the reaction of the outbreak was disrupted by canceling the federal grant in the state, Reuters reported.
“We are scraping to look for resources and staff needed to assist Texas and other jurisdictions,” Sugarman said.

A local public health official also told Reuters that the outbreak could last a year.
Lubbock Public Health Director Dr. Catherine Wells told Reuters that if the outbreak spread on January 20, 2026, it could lose its ham in the United States. The United States was declared free from local ham infection in 2000.
Texas health officials say that only 4%of the confirmed case is less than 25, “actively infectious”. Persons are probably contagious four days before and after the rash starts.

A total of 58 patients in the state have been admitted to the hospital since the outbreak began.
Currently, children under the age of 18 work on the largest population of people with ham, accounting for 381 out of 561.
Two casualties have been recorded in school-age children. The kids were not vaccinated and there was no underlying condition.
Since January, seven cases were considered as fully vaccinated, and four of those who had only a vaccine dose were considered as four cases, health officials said.

The other 550 cases were reported among people who were not vaccinated or their vaccine status is unknown.
